A man was arrested Monday for sexually assaulting a woman while she was unconscious due to an epileptic seizure.
Police said the incident happened in Sydney on Feb. 17, News.Com reported. The investigation into the incident was launched last month after the 40-year-old victim came forward and lodged a police complaint.
According to the police, the accused was known to the woman. He had visited the woman's apartment, presumably to help her move several items around the apartment. That's when she suffered the medical episode.
Police told 2GB Radio the victim's medical condition, for which she has been undergoing treatment, causes her to suffer seizure and "blackout for several minutes at a time."
Instead of helping her, the man sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious.
"The (alleged) victim woke up alone and realized something untoward occurred and after some time reported it to police,” Detective Inspector David El-Badawi told the radio station.
An investigation was launched in March, following which a 27-year-old man was arrested Monday morning. He has been taken to Campsie Police Station and charged with aggravated sexual assault while the victim was cognitively impaired.
The accused was refused bail and will appear before Bankstown Local Court Tuesday.
Calling the incident "horrific," El-Badawi said the case has shocked the detectives.
"To attack someone in this manner, in their moment of need, when they should be calling for medical assistance – it’s horrific. To take advantage of someone who needs medical attention, it’s a low act, it’s horrific, it’s not acceptable by anyone’s standards,” El-Badawi told 2GB Radio.
He added that the detectives investigated the case for many weeks before the accused, hailing from Lakemba, was arrested. He said the details of the case cannot be revealed as of now.
"(She), understandably, is still shaken and is undergoing counseling and we’re in constant contact with (her)," El-Badawi added.
The police official said they were hoping for a just outcome to the case. "We take all allegations of assault very seriously. Do not be afraid to come to us, we will take it seriously and investigate it best we can," the detective further said.
In a similar incident, five men were arrested last month after being accused of raping an intellectually disabled teen girl in Northern Israel. Three of the accused were siblings. Police said they raped the girl inside an abandoned car. The incident came to light after the girl's parents reported her missing.
