4-Month-Old Suffers Broken Bones After Father Abuses Girl For Months, Accused Charged
An infant in Raleigh, North Carolina, suffered from multiple injuries and broken bones after her father abused her for months. The man was arrested and charged with child abuse Friday.
According to court documents, the infant was abused by her father shortly after she was born in March. She suffered from several injuries including a fractured arm, a collarbone fracture, 11 rib fractures, abnormal liver function indicative of blunt force trauma. The four-month-old baby also had bruises on her face, back, and abdomen.
When questioned, the baby's father, identified as 24-year-old Verdine Dun, initially told the investigators that the girl suffered injuries from falling off the bed. The investigation, however, revealed that the narration was wrong and that the baby was abused.
According to the court documents, the man was accused of "show[ing] reckless disregard for human life by committing a grossly negligent omission, failing to seek medical treatment for his daughter."
He was taken into custody Friday and charged with intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury, a felony. He was being held at Wake County Detention Center with his bond set at $425,000. He was not allowed to have further contact with his daughter.
Meanwhile, the Infant’s 34-year-old mother, Nicole Latorre, was also charged with negligent child abuse for failing to report the abuse and for not providing the necessary treatment and care for the infant.
