4 Questions From ‘Game of Thrones’ Final Season Teasers
While the actual trailer is something “Game of Thrones” fans may still be waiting for when it comes to the show’s upcoming final season, the few small teasers for the remaining episodes certainly whet their appetites and left some big questions about what they might be able to expect when the series takes its final bow.
Between the two teasers HBO dropped for the show so far this year—one during a promo for everything they plan to offer in 2019 and one which announced when the series would officially return—there’s a lot of questions that fans may feel they need answered. While the show still seems to have a lot of loose ends to tie up in the final six episodes (like who will finally win the war for the Iron Throne), these teasers have only added more to the mix. Here are four questions the teasers have us hoping will be answered starting on April 14.
Why Is Sansa So Hostile Towards Daenerys?
The first true teaser showed Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) arrival in Winterfell for the first time, as well as the first face-to-face meeting between the Mother of Dragons and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). Both are strong and powerful women who have survived some incredible struggles and men who tried to hold them down over the years, but their meeting seems a bit...chilly.
Though Sansa gives Daenerys the greeting that is traditionally given to guests at Winterfell by saying that her ancestral home belongs to her, she doesn’t do so with a smile on her face or a warm look in her eyes. She likely isn’t pleased that Jon (Kit Harington) bent the knee to Daenerys and declared the North to be on her side in the battle for the Iron Throne, but does she have another reason to dislike the dragon queen?
Of course, even if she initially dislikes Daenerys, there may be a reason for her to later admire her. Winter Is Coming points out that Sansa’s hair in the promos is once again a telling sign of her character’s development, as it reflects Dany’s own styles.
Will Jon Even Care About His Parentage?
The second teaser shows Jon Snow in the crypts of Winterfell, where he is seemingly haunted by the fact that he still doesn’t know about his true lineage. The feather that was placed in Lyanna’s hand back in the first episode of the series seems to blow off her crypt statue as he walks by—but he doesn’t seem overly fazed about it at first.
He then looks back, however, and the feather is seen once more as ice seems to spread over the crypt with the arrival of the Night King. But is Jon’s apparent carelessness earlier in the clip a sign that he isn’t going to really be concerned with the fact that he’s not Ned Stark’s son after all?
It’s been wondered how Jon and Dany would react to learning that they are really aunt and nephew, and Jon is the product of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen’s love. It’s not predicted to go well when Dany also learns he has the legitimate claim to the Iron Throne, not her, because he’s also not a bastard since his parents had secretly wed.
However, Jon has always been reluctant to be the face of power, and never really enjoyed having it. Could he wind up pretending he still knows nothing about his bloodline to let Dany, who does want power, still rule?
Could his carelessness also be a sign that he doesn’t think his relationship with Daenerys is wrong, despite the fact that they are blood relatives? The show has often made a case for Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) Lannister’s incestuous relationship by pointing out that the Targaryen family wed within themselves for hundreds of years, and no one ever batted an eye. Will that history keep Jon and Dany still in one another’s beds as the show continues?
Do The Crypt Statues Hold A Massive Clue About Who Will Live And Die?
The same teaser that sees Jon in the crypts also shows Sansa and Arya (Maisie Williams) walking through them as well. Before the ice begins to take over and signal the Night King’s arrival, the three come across new statues—of themselves.
While clearly the statues aren’t signs all three are dead, there was something fans noticed that had them questioning if they held a big clue to the Stark sibling’ fates as the show came to a close. While Arya and Sansa’s reflected them somewhere around the ages they are now on the show, Jon’s looks like it is a statue of him at an older age. Does that mean Sansa and Arya will both die before the show ends, but Jon will still be alive?
Where is Bran?
Granted, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) doesn’t really see himself as Bran Stark any longer, and only as the Three-Eyed Raven, but his conspicuous absence in the recent promo has some fans wondering where he is. If the focus is meant to be on the Stark siblings, why is Jon, who fans know is actually their cousin, with Sansa and Arya?
There’s been speculation over the years that Bran will eventually be revealed as the Night King—does his absence from the teaser suggest that theory to be true?
Hopefully “Game of Thrones” will answer those questions and more when the final season premieres on Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
