A four-year-old girl was mauled to death by her neighbor’s pet dog in the Indian state Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

Roshni Jatav was playing with her seven-year-old brother outside her house Tuesday evening when the incident took place. The girl’s mother stepped inside the house for a few minutes when the dog, a stray adopted by the neighbor, became aggressive and attacked the child without provocation. When the canine dragged the child after catching her by the throat, the passers-by threw stones on the dog. However, the dog got more aggressive, buried its fangs deeper into the girl’s throat, ripping it apart. The dog then shook the child like a doll.

Witnesses said the dog let go of the girl after 10 minutes and she was rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to injuries. The autopsy revealed the victim had deep wounds on her neck, abdomen and head.

The victim’s father filed a police complaint against the dog’s owner. Residents of the area told police the dog was adopted by the neighbor one year ago and that the canine attacked several people after that.

"Based on the family's complaint, we have registered a case against the dog's owner Hiralal," a police officer confirmed.

Meanwhile, the dog was missing and animal control sent out teams to search for the canine.

Earlier this month, a seven-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a pack of stray dogs near her home in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Devika was walking toward her home with a bag of food when she was attacked by the dogs. Few children who were passing the route alerted the girl’s father who then rushed her to a nearby hospital in a critical condition with bite marks all over her body. Doctors declared her brought dead. Police said animal control was directed to catch all the stray dogs and “all the villagers have been asked not to leave their children alone” till then.
