Stray dog attacks are on the rise in Bhopal and have emerged as a major headache for residents. Last year, a seven-year-old girl was mauled by strays in the city. A similar incident happened to a six-year-old in 2019.
The recent attack has triggered a response from the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission. The commission has asked the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the health department to submit a report on actions taken to tackle the stray dog menace. It has also sought a report on the number of stray dogs removed from the streets and sterilized in 2021.
The commission has decided to review the monthly monitoring committee meetings run by the BMC on animal birth control, dog attacks, action taken in each incident and victims' medical reports.
