4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Lake Arrowhead, Maine; Felt In Boston, Southern New England

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Maine on Tuesday. It was centered near Lake Arrowhead, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The ground began to shake in New England around 7:12 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Lake Arrowhead is about 30 miles west of Portland.

The depth of the quake was about 3.1 miles, according to the USGS.

Tremors were felt in Boston, but Police Commissioner Ed Davis said no damage was reported there, according to his Twitter feed. The quake could be felt as far as southern New England.

Many took to social media outlets to discuss whether or not the rumble they felt actually resulted from a quake.

Christian Apollon asked on Facebook, “Wait a sec... Anyone else feel that earthquake?!?!?!?!”

“my whole apartment just shook, including picture frames on the shelf...did we just have an earthquake,” Cathlin Mary asked.

Jen Rosen responded, “i felt that too, and my friend from Salem has the same status..”

“Ok, glad I am not alone. I just freaked out! Ken didn't feel a thing in the shower so I thought I was going crazy!!!! In my old mill building apartment did not feel comfortable with the whole thing creaking,” Jess Potvin shared.

“ok so glad other people felt it!...i immediately went on facebook to see if it was just me going crazy! Jess- my brick building shook hard!” Cathlin Mary responded.

Phones at the National Weather Service reportedly began to “ring off the hook,” even though the USGS considers earthquakes at a 4.6 magnitude “weak.”
