49ers vs. Eagles: Odds Suggest 2023 NFC Championship Game Is Brock Purdy's First NFL Loss
The San Francisco 49ers' long winning streak is likely to end against Philadelphia Eagles, according to the latest betting odds. Brock Purdy and the 49ers are clear underdogs in the 2023 NFC Championship Game.
The Eagles are 2.5-point favorites at BetMGM. The 49ers have +125 odds to pull off the outright upset. Philadelphia has -150 odds to win the NFC Championship Game, regardless of the margin of victory.
The odds have remained relatively unchanged all week. The point reached a field goal at some sportsbooks before falling a half-point. The 49ers have not been favored once since the NFC Championship matchup was made official.
San Francisco has been the NFL's hottest team for three months. The 49ers enter Sunday's matchup at Lincoln Financial Field on a 12-game winning streak. Purdy has a perfect 7-0 record as a starting quarterback. In the week prior to making his first official start, the rookie took the majority of snaps for San Francisco in its 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins.
Jalen Hurts has started more than twice as many games as Purdy this season and almost has a perfect record himself. The Eagles are 15-1 when Hurts plays quarterback.
Hurts is likely to finish as the runner-up in the 2022 MVP race. The third-year quarterback took a significant leap from a solid 2021 campaign. Hurts became one of the league's most efficient passers, completing 66.5% of his attempts for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 101.6 passer rating.
Hurts' ability to beat teams with his legs is what truly makes him one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in football. The 24-year-old ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns in just 14 regular-season games. Hurts had another rushing touchdown in Philadelphia's 38-7 win over the New York Giants in the divisional playoffs.
Purdy also ran for a score, in addition to throwing for three touchdowns in his first playoff win. After cruising past the Seattle Seahawks 41-23, Purdy wasn't as effective in the divisional playoffs, but he outperformed Dak Prescott in San Francisco's 19-12 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Despite flirting with trouble, Purdy has yet to throw an interception in the playoffs. Purdy doesn't have a multi-interception game in his young career.
The NFC Championship Game might be the toughest test yet for either quarterback. San Francisco's defense ranks atop the league, allowing fewer yards and points than anyone. Philadelphia ranked second in total defense. After recording 15 more sacks than any other team, the Eagles sacked Daniel Jones five times in their first playoff game.
If Purdy's magical run is going to continue all the way to the Super Bowl, he'll have to survive against the Philadelphia defense in his first-ever road playoff game.
