5 Children, 1 Young Adult Die In Tennessee Car Crash After Being Ejected From Vehicle

Five children, including a 1-year-old girl, and a young adult were killed in a car crash in Tennessee early Sunday after being ejected from the flipped vehicle.

Two adults also suffered injuries in the accident, which took place on Interstate-24 West near exit 24 at westbound mile marker 23 in Robertson County at about 2 a.m.

While responding to the scene, the emergency personnel found a red Toyota Camry flipped upside down with "very extensive damage," Brent Dyer, chief of the county's emergency management services office said, as per ABC News.

"From what we simply saw, it was a very severe rollover associated type crash and it appeared that multiple patients were ejected," Dyer said, during a press briefing, WSMV reported. "It's one of the hardest things we'll ever do, as anybody in emergency services, is to realize that you can't do something for a child."

There were three adults and five kids inside the vehicle when it hit a shoulder barrier underneath a bridge and flipped over, ejecting the children and the woman. All six young girls were pronounced dead at the scene. Robertson County Emergency Medical Services (RCEMS) said the six females ranged from one to 18 years of age.

"Of these 6 individuals, all were female and ages appeared to have ranged from 1-18 yrs of age. All of the 6 patients who were pronounced as deceased were found outside of the vehicle, all of which appeared to have also been ejected," RCEMS said in a statement on Facebook.

The adult woman received treatment at the scene before she was air-lifted to a local hospital, the officials confirmed. The driver of the car, an adult male, suffered minor injuries, and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Details regarding the identities of the victims and if they were related were not immediately revealed by the authorities.

A pickup truck was also found smashed into a road barrier near the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured in the incident. However, it remains unclear if the truck was involved in the crash.

At least two medical helicopters and more than four different county emergency crews, including Cheatham County EMS, assisted at the scene.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. A section of the highway was closed for several hours for the investigation before authorities reopened it later Sunday.

"Our office recognizes the incredible difficulty of this scene," RCEMS said. "Please keep the families and persons involved in your thoughts and prayers."

Meanwhile, Dyers urged people to ensure their children are in proper restraint devices, while they are in a car.

"I beg people to put your children in the proper restraint devices and I beg everyone driving on the road to think about the outcome of impatience and the outcome of intolerance," Dyer said.
