A New Jersey waitress has allegedly been kidnapped and assaulted by five dine and dashers she chased down after they left without settling their $70 bill.
The 20-year-old waitress, whose identity was not revealed, confronted a group of five people she had waited upon for running out on their bill at around 11:15 p.m. Saturday at the Nifty Fifty's in Turnersville, Washington Township.
"They pulled her [the waitress] into the vehicle and assaulted her inside the vehicle," Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik told WPVI.
In the surveillance footage, the waitress could be seen running up to a white Dodge Durango the group tried to flee in. An altercation ensued, following which a woman left the car and the waitress ended up inside the vehicle, reported NBC News.
The group allegedly assaulted the waitress in the backseat of the vehicle while heading North on Route 42. After driving less than a mile, the driver made a U-turn and pushed the victim out of the vehicle, close to the restaurant near the Aldi Cross.
The waitress, who did not have her cellphone on her, ran back to the restaurant and called 911. She was hospitalized after the incident but has since been released. She suffered from bruises and a possible concussion, police said.
"As an employee, that makes me feel bad. And mad," John Hill, who works at the restaurant, told WPVI.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Nifty Fifty's said, "The safety of our staff is our top priority. We value our employees and want them to know that no amount of money is worth their lives, nor is it their responsibility. We are sending thoughts and prayers to our employee for a speedy recovery."
Following the incident, police reminded employees to take down the license plate of the vehicle used by any customer who refuses to pay and report it to authorities instead of chasing them down.
"Do not chase after accused suspects and confront them yourselves," Gurcsik said as per ABC News.
Police are still looking for the suspects. They were last seen driving away in a newer model white Dodge Durango on Rt. 42 south near Monroe Township.
