A man in Austria was bitten by a 5-foot python while he was sitting on his toilet Monday morning. The snake, which belonged to his neighbor, had reportedly escaped and slithered into the man's house.
The 65-year-old unidentified man was bitten at his home in Graz, a city in the southern province of Styria. The snake that escaped unnoticed from the neighbor's house apparently entered his toilet through the drains.
Shortly after the victim sat on the toilet, he “felt a ‘nip’ in the genital area,” and looked down to discover that he was bitten by an albino reticulated python, CW-affiliated news outlet KTLA reported.
The victim only suffered minor injuries, and was taken to a hospital to rule out an infection. A reptile expert was called to retrieve the snake, which was cleaned and returned to the owner.
The police said the 24-year-old neighbor faces an investigation on suspicion of causing bodily harm by negligence. He owns 11 non-venomous constrictor snakes and a gecko that are kept in terrariums and drawers in his apartment.
Though it was initially unclear how the snake entered the victim's apartment, the police believe it must have slithered in through the drain, CBS-affiliated KMOV 4 reported.
According to the reptile database, there are around 41 species of pythons found within the family Pythonidae. Pythons are nonvenomous snakes native to countries in Asia, Africa and Australia. The family Pythonidae contains some of the largest snakes in the world. Some reticulated pythons can grow over 30 feet in length.
Last month, a family in India spotted an 8-foot king cobra slithering out of their toilet. When a man from a village in the northern state of Rajasthan entered his bathroom to freshen up, he saw the huge snake inside the toilet. The terrified man called out to the other family members, and when they all gathered outside the toilet, they saw the snake sitting on the toilet seat. The police and rescue teams then responded to the house and retrieved the snake, which was released in the forest.
