Three teenage girls were arrested for assaulting a police officer at a train station in Massachusetts. Two more juveniles were arrested later in connection with the attack, authorities said.

The incident took place at the Forest Hills MBTA station in Boston just before 4 p.m. Monday, MBTA Transit Police Department said in a statement. A group of 40 to 50 youngsters were inside the train station and were being an inconvenience in the station's mezzanine, the department said, adding that Transit Police officers were assigned to the station at the time for the Boston Public School break.

"At this time there were approximately 40 to 50 youths who were loitering inside the station. The youths refused to move along and utilize public transportation," officials said. "Their behavior was causing a public inconvenience and creating an unsafe environment within the station."

A Transit Police Department officer approached the juveniles and told them they would have to either use the public transport services available to them or leave the station. Youngsters from the group then "violently" attacked the officer and knocked him to the ground as they kicked and punched him, the statement said.

"Once the officer was on the ground several in the group continued to kick him and drag the officer," it further said.

Other officers then requested backup because of the "level of violence exhibited by the assailants and the large number involved."

The situation was brought under control after additional officers from the Transit Police Department, Boston Police Department and Massachusetts State Police arrived at the scene.

Three teenage girls, aged 14, 15, and 16, were arrested Monday and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a police officer.

The teenage girls were released from custody on personal recognizance with conditions that do not allow them to leave their homes except for school. They were also asked to stay away from each other and told to keep away from the Forest Hills MBTA station.

Two other juveniles were arrested Tuesday in connection with the assault on the police officer, CBS News reported.

Details about the additional two juveniles were not released.

"We will not tolerate this behavior and will arrest those who engage in such anti-social violent and criminal behavior," Transit Police was quoted as saying by the outlet.
