KEY POINTS

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has netted five goals in Euros 2020
  • He has equaled the world record (109) of most international goals
  • Ronaldo's Portugal will next take on Belgium in the last-16 game

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in exceptional form in the ongoing Euros 2020 for he almost single-handedly took Portugal into the Round of 16.

With five goals, Ronaldo is currently at the top of the goal charts in the Euros 2020 and has also provided an assist. In a tournament where players have missed a penalty left right and center, Ronaldo has perfectly scored the set-piece three times already. Only six out of the 14 spot-kicks have been converted into goals so far.

On Wednesday, Ronaldo helped Portugal suffer an embarrassing group-stage exit as he netted a brace to draw 2-2 with World Champions France.

In three group games in Euros 2020, the Portuguese skipper Ronaldo has claimed as many as five milestones.

When Ronaldo opened the scoring in Portugal’s fixture against France, he became the first Portuguese player to score in all the three group games at the European Championships. Earlier, Ronaldo netted a double in Portugal’s tournament opener against Hungary before he scored in his team’s 4-2 loss against Germany.

When Ronaldo took the field in Portugal’s game against Hungary earlier this month, he became the first player in the history of the European Championship to feature in five different editions of the tournament. When he scored the first of two goals in the match, the Portuguese captain became the first player to score in five different terms of the Euros. No other player has scored in more than three editions.

Ahead of the Euros 2020, Ronaldo was tied with Michel Platini (9) for most goals in European Championship history. After scoring against Hungary, the Juventus star became the all-time top scorer in the tournament. Ronaldo, who made his Euros debut in 2004, now has 14 goals in the tournament.

By netting the brace against France Wednesday, Ronaldo went past Miroslav Klose in the record of the most goals by a European player in the European Championships and FIFA World Cup combined. Ronaldo has now scored 20 goals (Euros + World Cup), one more than former Germany forward.

With the two goals in Portugal’s crucial draw with France, Ronaldo took his tally of international goals to 109. By doing so, he equaled Iranian legend Ali Daei's (109) record of most goals by a player in international football.

Keeping in account Ronaldo’s current form, he may surpass Daei to become the all-time leading goal scorer in international soccer in the coming days.

Ronaldo-led Portugal are set to face World No. 1 Belgium in the last-16 of the Euros 2020 on Sunday.
