The All-star second baseman got into a heated argument over a third-strike call with umpire John Hirschbeck, and decided to retaliate by spitting in his face. It was an ugly incident all around as Alomar later made public that Hirschbeck uttered a racial slur and was bitter because one of his sons had died of ALD, and another was diagnosed with it. The two later patched things up, but Alomar’s reputation was strongly damaged.
