5 Movies To See In Theaters On Fourth Of July Weekend 2019
With its extended holiday weekend and tendency to attract huge new releases, the Fourth of July has built a reputation as one of the biggest movie weekends of the year. With families gathering together to celebrate America’s birthday later this week, many may be wondering what big new movies they should see in-between barbeque and fireworks. Here’s a rundown of the biggest movies in theaters for 2019's July 4th weekend.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home”
Undoubtedly the biggest new release of the weekend, this is the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second solo entry for Tom Holland’s loveable web-slinger. Set after “Avengers: Endgame,” the story finds Peter Parker on a school trip to Europe when he is recruited to help a mysterious man from another dimension (Jake Gyllenhaal) fight a deadly new foe. Trailers indicate immense charm from the young cast and big battles against the massive Elementals. The cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, and Cobie Smulders. “Midsommar”
For something completely different, check out “Midsommar,” the latest arthouse horror movie from the director of “Hereditary.” Set amidst the midsummer rituals of a pagan Swedish cult, the film explores toxic relationships amid serene imagery and increasingly violent and disturbing rituals.
“Annabelle Comes Home”
Maybe you’d like your horror movie a little more entertaining and a little less artsy. For that, check out the latest film in “The Conjuring” franchise, which finds the titular possessed doll leading a host of demons to escape from the Warrens’ room of horrors. Reviews highlight the films spooky and fun vibe, suggesting something more like a haunted house ride.
“Yesterday”
A film built around the music of a British band might seem strange for such an American holiday, but who can really say no to The Beatles? Another crowd-pleaser from the writer of “Love, Actually” and “About Time,” “Yesterday” is sure to please the entire extended family with its classic tunes and heartwarming romance.
“Aladdin”
The oldest movie on this list came out in May, but “Aladdin” is still kicking. A live-action remake of Disney’s classic animated musical, the film has struck a chord, pulling in families week after week with its colorful adventure and vibrant cast. What could make for a better theater excursion than Will Smith belting out a new rendition of “Friend Like Me”?
