A month after Domenic Patrick Aguilar-Acevedo was allegedly abused and killed in a Texas hotel room, the body of the 5-year-old was found in a deep ravine near Fraser in Colorado.
The child died on July 25 in a San Antonio hotel, according to a complaint from Bexar County, Texas.
The child's mother Nickolle Aguilar, 25, and her boyfriend Daniel Garcia, 26, were arrested Saturday from Florida in connection with the murder, reported CBS Denver.
According to court documents, Nickolle told police that Garcia hit the boy "so hard he slammed into a wall and then started vomiting a dark substance." The couple did not seek medical treatment and the child died later.
The warrant said Garcia was caught on camera carrying a lifeless body down a hotel staircase in the early morning hours of July 26.
Though the couple had hotel reservations through July 29, they left without properly checking out.
The woman told agents they traveled to Colorado with the boy’s body and camped near Rocky Mountain National Park. They left Domenic's body near their campsite, according to the warrant.
The couple then drove south to Mexico and continued to Costa Rica.
The incident came to light on Aug. 16 when Nickolle's mother questioned her about the child. She then confessed to her mother about the alleged murder. The mother then contacted San Antonio Police Department and the FBI. Nickolle was then quizzed by the FBI, who told them about the child's death.
On Aug. 25, the boy's body was found in a deep ravine. Authorities said the body was exposed to the elements and animal activity for nearly a month, the warrant added.
Nickolle and her mother traveled to Colorado for the search because they wanted to "do the right thing" and give the boy a proper burial.
She is also said to have told police that she saw Garcia abusing Domenic ahead of his death. However, she didn’t intervene because "she was too eager to be in a relationship." She added that they chose not to report Domenic’s death because they were concerned about losing custody of their other children.
The warrant said that the Larimer County Coroner's Office performed an autopsy. Although results are still pending, there was evidence of trauma on the body.
