'50 Shades of Grey' Movie Cast: 6 Reasons Why Jamie Dornan Is The Perfect Christian Grey [PHOTOS]
After weeks of churning rumors regarding who would play Christian Grey in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie, the film has finally found its star in Jamie Dornan. While the world has yet to see the 31-year-old Irish actor portray the sexually sadistic billionaire on screen, Dornan's history in the entertainment industry solidifies producers’ decision to cast him in the erotic film. Here are six reasons why Jamie Dornan is the perfect Christian Grey:
FILM EXPERIENCE
While a majority of Dornan’s recent projects have taken place on the small screen, he is no stranger to starring in blockbuster films. After only just breaking into the U.S. entertainment industry in 2006, Dornan was cast alongside Kirsten Dunst in the Oscar award-winning historical drama “Marie Antoinette.” While he only scored a cameo in the flick playing Dunst’s love interest Count Axel Ferse, the film garnered more than $60 million at the box office worldwide and received critical acclaim.
In recent years, Dornan is better known for his work playing the Huntsman/Sheriff Graham in the ABC series “Once Upon a Time” and portraying the serial killer Paul Spector in the TV drama “The Fall.”
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Following filmmakers' decision to cast “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey, facial features expert Jean Haner claimed that he was miscast in the role. “If the author wanted to choose someone more suitable for this part, she would have picked a guy with sharp cheekbones and hollowness to his cheeks, both features of someone who likes to be in control,” Haner told Cosmopolitan.com.
Dornan’s physical appearance is (arguably) spot on, according to author E.L. James’ description of Christian Grey in the book series. For a man said to be in his late 20s, tall, slim, muscular and “the epitome of male beauty,” the actor's 5 ft. 11 in. figure meshes well with the triology's fictional lead. (See the above photo if you remained unconvinced.)
NO CASTING BACKLASH
When James announced that Hunnam would take on the role of Christian Grey on her Twitter page in September, many fans revolted. While some accepted the decision, others responded by releasing the petition “We Want Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele on 50 Shades” in an effort to get producers to recast the leading roles. Despite suffering from a casting switch up just weeks before the scheduled beginning of filming, fans reacted positively to news that Dornan was hired following Hunnam’s departure.
ANASTASIA ALREADY LOVES HIM
Dornan is already loved by his “Fifty Shades of Grey” co-star Dakota Johnson, because according to multiple reports, the Anastasia Steele actress helped hand-pick him for the role herself. Before Dornan was announced, producer Michael De Luca told E! News that the 24-year-old actress was playing a key role in the recasting. “She's helping us look through the candidates to see which chemistry kind of captures our attention,” he said.
Fellow cast members are not the only ones in love with Dornan; De Luca’s wife, Angelique De Luca, has also publicly expressed her approval of the casting decision. “To be honest, to me, [Charlie] wasn't a great fit,” she confessed on Twitter earlier this month. The self-professed entrepreneur and philanthropist later commented on her husband’s decision to cast Dornan, saying, “My wish came true! I'm proud & beyond hot for my new boyfriend (yes Mike knows ;) @JamieDornan1 to be CG!”
LOVE SCENE VETERAN
On camera, Dornan is already a master of the bedroom. His first sex scene on the big screen came in the 2006 “Marie Antionette,” his multiple on-screen makeout sessions with Dunst and subsequent sexual escapades spanning numerous fan compilations on YouTube.
In his nine-episode, season one run on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” Dornan’s character Sheriff Graham also had many memorable sexual rendezvous with his on-screen lover, Queen Regina (actress Lana Parilla). (Check out Dornan’s steamy “Once Upon a Time” scenes here).
BACKGROUND IN FASHION
Just like his character Christian Grey, Dornan also has an interest in fashion. Prior to his burgeoning career as an actor, the Irishman posed for multiple fashion labels, the images all showing the actor sporting suitable attire similar to what Grey, a well-dressed Seattle buissnessman, is described as frequently wearing in the series. According to a New York Times interview with him in 2006, he has worked for big labels ranging from Calvin Klein to Dior and Armani.
