At least seven people died, after 50 vehicles collided due to dense fog conditions on Rohtak-Rewari highway in Indian state of Haryana on Monday.

The pile-up occurred after two vehicles collided in the wee hours on National Highway-71 and several other vehicles piled up behind due to poor visibility, injuring 12. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

School buses, cars and SUVs were also involved in the accident, resulting in a 1.2 mile traffic jam. The traffic movement on the stretch is expected to remain extremely slow till afternoon, Zee News reported.

Initial investigation showed extremely low visibility and high speed led to the accident. Cranes were brought in, to separate the vehicles while emergency rescue personnel managed to pull out bodies.

Images and videos from the scene show debris of vehicles all over the highway.

Dense fog conditions result in several accidents taking place in North India every year. Authorities have warned people to avoid travelling when visibility is low especially in the wee hours.

Cold winter wave conditions prevailed over northwest India , resulting in India’s capital New Delhi recording its all-time lowest temperature for the month of December.

“Cold wave and severe cold wave conditions would continue to prevail over Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan during next 3 days with the increase in severity and spatial coverage. Isolated cold wave conditions also likely to develop over west Uttar Pradesh,” the Indian Meteorological Department said in a statement on Monday, the Indian Express reported.
