500,000 Electric Heating Pads Sold At Amazon, Walmart Recalled Over Burn, Shock Risk

A company is recalling some 500,000 electric heating pads, as using them may "lead to burns, mild shocks or rashes/irritation." The affected products were sold on Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

From July 2021 to September 2022, Whele received 286 complaints about heating pads either overheating, sparking, burning or showing some other electrical issues, it noted in its company announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website.

Of these reports, 31 involved injuries including burns, mild shocks and skin rashes or irritation.

"This recall has been initiated due to product safety concerns," the company noted. "Severe burns may result in infection or formation of scar tissue."

The recall affects the Mighty Bliss Electric Heating Pads that were manufactured from Jan. 8, 2021, to Jan. 3, 2022. It includes model numbers MB-001 (NA-H1121B), which came in blue and was Large in size; MB-002 (NA-H21C), which was also blue in color but was Extra Large in size and PE-MtyBls-HeatPad-12x24-Gry-V2(NA-H1121B), which was gray and Large in size.

The list of affected lot numbers is available on both the FDA and company recall websites. The lot and model numbers are printed on the item itself under the product instructions. For instance, two lot numbers under model MB-002 (NA-H21C) are affected by the recall. However, quite a few lot numbers are included under model MB-001 (NA-H1121B).

In total, some 544,212 units of heating pads are affected. They were distributed from July 29, 2021, to July 21, 2022.

Photos of the recalled heating pads, including where customers can find the model and lot numbers on the unit, are available on the FDA and company websites.

Those who find that they are in possession of an affected product are advised to stop using it. Instead, they should follow the instructions provided by the company regarding the actions that they need to take, from unplugging the device to uploading a photo of it on the company website.

"Immediately discontinue use of the heating pad, but DO NOT dispose of it until your registration is complete," the company said. "You will be required to submit images of the heating pad with the cord cut."
