In a courageous act, a 55-year-old woman was seen fighting off a big cat that charged at her from behind. The scary incident was caught on her home's surveillance camera and the footage shows the woman fending off the beast despite it catching her off guard.
Reports identified the victim as Nirmala Devi Singh, a resident of Aarey Colony near India's financial capital, Mumbai. This is the third such attack in the week in Aarey Colony, reported NDTV.
The video, which is going viral on social media, shows a leopard lurking behind the bushes of Singh's home. It tries to hide as the woman walks slowly into the frame with the aid of a walking stick.
Seemingly unaware of the animal, she is shown sitting on an elevated platform with her back facing the animal. The leopard then emerges from hiding and walks steadily towards her, before pouncing on her.
Though shocked to see the leopard, Singh tries to fend it off using her walking stick. However, the animal pushes her down on the ground with its paws.
Though it charged back at her again, Singh continues to fight it off with a stick, forcing the animal to step back. It watches for another second, before finally fleeing. Soon after, a few men were seen running into the frame, probably after hearing the woman's calls for help.
Fortunately, Singh escaped with minor scratches on her arms and legs. She was rushed to a hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
Aarey, with a vast swathe of green and home to a wide variety of animals and birds, has been witness to several incidents of leopards straying into residential areas. The area is the last few remaining green spaces in the city of Mumbai.
Recently, the local people in Aarey Colony had saved a four-year-old child from the jaws of a leopard. The incident happened last Sunday. Reports said the boy was playing outside his home when the leopard dragged him away.
However, some people saw him being carried off by the leopard and rushed to his rescue. The men chased the leopard, prompting it to drop the child in the bushes. The boy suffered injuries on his head and back and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
