Manchester City fans have been left fuming when the Premier League club announced the departure of Leroy Sane to Bayern Munich at the end of the 2019-20 season.
Bayern Munich have agreed to pay $55 million for Sane, who had joined Man City in 2013 from Schalke for a fee of $45 million. The 24-year-old forward played a key role in Man City’s domestic treble-winning campaign in 2018-19 but has been injured for the majority of the ongoing season.
Man City boss Pep Guardiola disclosed last week that Sane, who has scored 39 goals in 135 appearances for Man City overall, was offered a new contract but he rejected it saying he wanted to leave this summer.
According to BBC, Sane is expected to fly to Germany soon for a medical evaluation and while he cannot play the Champions League for Bayern, it is believed that he won’t return, thereby having played his final match for the four-time Premier League winners.
It is understood that Bayern have offered Sane, whose contract at Man City was due to expire in June 2022, a five-year deal worth $24 million, which is double the amount Man City had offered in new contract negotiations.
Man City boss Guardiola has suggested that they are mostly not going to seek a replacement for Sane as they already have ample options "on the left". “I don’t know if he (Sane) is going to leave this summer or at end of his contract but we have enough good players upfront."
"Gabriel (Jesus) can play on the left, Phil Foden can play on the left, we have Raheem (Sterling) there. We have big, talented players upfront. Most of them are in good health conditions, like Phil, Riyad (Mahrez), Gabriel, Raheem, they can play quite regularly for a long period of time, they are so stable in terms of injury situations.,” Guardiola said in a recent interview.
Angry and sad Man City fans have reacted to this transfer news, while many have felt that Man City should have demanded more money.
With seven games in hand, Man City have lost the title race to Liverpool following their 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Out of their four Premier League titles, two have come from the last two seasons.
