- Gavi is attracting interest from Liverpool and Chelsea
FC Barcelona’s wonderkid Gavi has reportedly asked the club for more money amid interest from Premier League club Chelsea.
Gavi is contracted with Barcelona until 2023 and has not signed an extension yet. The 17-year-old midfielder wants the Camp Nou side to offer him a high salary like his teammates Pedri and Ansu Fati.
Gavi, who made his senior debut with Barcelona in the 2021-22 season, currently is among the lowest earners at the club. The teenage sensation earns a weekly wage of around $2,997, according to salarysport.com.
Knowing Barcelona’s financial crisis, Chelsea are planning to take advantage of it and make a bid of $57 million for Gavi, according to El Nacional.
Despite being so young and into just his first season of first-team soccer, Gavi has become a vital member of Xavi Hernandez’ Barcelona. The central midfielder has made 28 appearances for the Catalans, across all competitions, in the underway campaign. Gavi has started in 16 out of his 21 La Liga appearances. While he has netted two goals, he has also provided three assists.
It was earlier reported that even Liverpool were monitoring Gavi’s contract situation at Barcelona. The Reds still need to strengthen their midfield and Jurgen Klopp has short-listed Gavi for the role. The Liverpool board is willing to go ahead with it believing it would be a great investment.
By accepting a move to Merseyside, Gavi will not only be close to winning trophies but also play under Klopp, one of the best managers in soccer at present. Klopp is known to bring the best out of young players and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones are the testimony to it.
Barcelona, who are aware of the immense interest from Premier League for Gavi, recently offered the young central midfielder a contract extension. The Catalan club want to insert a massive release clause of $1.1 billion in Gavi’s new contract just like they did with Pedri and Anus Fati.
But Gavi turned it down as he is not in a hurry to commit to a new deal, considering he is just 17, reported SPORT.
