6-Year-Old Girl, Mother Found Stabbed To Death Inside NYC Apartment; Suspect Kills Self
A man allegedly killed his girlfriend and her 6-year-old daughter before taking his own life. The dead bodies of the mother and child were found with multiple stab wounds inside an apartment in New York City.
Gabrielle Muniz, 26, and her daughter, 6-year-old Rozara Estevez, were found dead in the Bronx apartment when police went there for a wellness check Saturday. The child was found under the covers of her bed with stab wounds, ABC7NY reported. Cops also found the mother's body in the apartment. Three knives were reportedly retrieved from the apartment.
"I just had an idea my baby was going to end up dead. I feel like I'm just in shock – keeping it pretty much together," Muniz's mother, Yanik Rocha, told the outlet.
The suspect, identified as Muniz's boyfriend Caleb Duberry, was on parole for assault when he allegedly took the lives of the mother and child. The man was last seen leaving Muniz's apartment Saturday.
Duberry reportedly barricaded himself inside another apartment, which was about a mile away from Muniz, and fatally stabbed himself. Cops found his body Sunday.
Muniz's father, Ricardo, said Duberry did not like his daughter's career goals. She was working from home for a law firm and was also a pharmacy student.
"She told me he used to beat her up. He broke her laptop because he was jealous of her profession," the father told ABC.
The victim had reportedly added Duberry to the lease of her Monticello Avenue apartment a few months ago.
Cops did not reveal a motive behind the crime.
"I'm disgusted at what happened because it not only took my sister but my niece," Muniz's sister, Gisselle, told the New York Post.
She described her niece as a "little beam of sunshine" and said, "I'm sure she watched her mommy die before she was taken. She loved her unicorns. She was so sweet. Just thinking about her and hearing her voice in my head, I can't believe that this happened to her, too."
"I'm really good with vibes and I honestly didn't really like him. I just knew she was happy," she said about her sister.
Rocha told NBC New York: "I have to bury my daughter and my granddaughter, and I just gotta wrap my head around this right now."
