62% of Britons Say The Best Health Remedies Include Hot Toddies And Salt Water
One of the most common health advice received from relatives and friends, especially older ones, when down with a sore through is gargling saltwater. For colds, there’s always the hot toddy to drink before going to bed.
In one study involving 2,000 adults, researchers discovered that almost 50% still prefer a home remedy they learned from their parents when dealing with the common cold. Around 75% also turn to steam inhalation in dealing with head congestion that occurs along with cold.
One in seven persons also firmly believes garlic’s revitalizing power. Another 22% prefer to eat more oranges or drink their natural equivalent to give their body vitamin C.
In the same study, almost one in four persons turned to hot chicken soup to battle an impending cold. Around 42% of research participants choose saltwater over scientific medication as they believe it helps alleviate the symptoms more quickly.
Other health advice passed from older generations includes clearing chest infection by drinking water after boiling onions in it. Making a tea out of orange peelings to get rid of the common cold in 24 hours is also among this generational health advice.
The study, which was commissioned by Olbas Herbal Remedies, revealed more than 70% say they successfully treated an ailment with a health remedy. Some of the study’s participants even say they keep a recipe of such home remedies in their back pocket. They believe such remedies can help them a lot when they feel ill.
Dr. Roger Henderson, a family doctor and an expert on herbal remedies, says millions of Britons deal with common ailments like cold during the winter season. Many of them prefer to deal with such ailments with herbal solutions instead of over the counter medicines.
The doctor also said that approximately 62% of Britons believe that such home remedies hold some scientific proof. This perhaps explains why home remedies for common ailments remain very popular.
Other popular home remedies include smelling menthol to clear a stuffy nose and putting the entire head and face over a bowl filled with steaming water to alleviate congestion. Taking more vitamin C to cure a common cold and eating honey and lemon to ease symptoms of sore throat are also among these popular home remedies.
