50% of the entire world population has an itchy scalp and flakiness. Yes, you read it right. Dandruff has become so common that it affects almost half of the world population. Although dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, and sensitivity to hair products can cause dandruff, the growth of a particular fungus (Malassezia) that lives on your scalp can be the main culprit.

Here are a few ways to help you get rid of dandruff permanently:

1. Apply tea tree oil to reduce the severity of dandruff symptoms. Tea tree oil is enriched with powerful anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate dandruff. Studies have shown that tea tree oil use has been effective in reducing dandruff symptoms like itchiness and greasiness.

2. Apply coconut oil to prevent dryness- one of the main causes of dandruff. Coconut oil keeps your skin hydrated, prevents dryness, has antimicrobial properties and thereby prevents dandruff efficiently. Studies have also confirmed the positive effects of coconut oil on dandruff prevention.

3. Opt for aloe vera as a preventive home remedy for dandruff. Aloe vera is rich in antibacterial and antifungal properties which can prevent dandruff. It can rehydrate the scalp and reduce inflammation too.

4. Make use of onion Juice in your hair care routine. Studies have proven that onions contain phytochemical compounds that can fight dandruff. Topical application of onion juice over your scalp can not only eliminate flakiness but also reduce the occurrence of dandruff.

5. Consume a cup of probiotics foods such as yogurt every day. Yogurt contains lactobacillus paracasei which can work on your scalp to restore a healthy microbiome and thereby help you get rid of dandruff.

6. Make use of aspirin in your hair care routine to get rid of dandruff. Salicylic acid contains anti-inflammatory properties and has been widely used in several anti-dandruff shampoos. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is very effective in treating both dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. As an easy home remedy, crush a couple of aspirin tablets and mix it with your shampoo to wash your hair.

7. Consume a lot of foods containing omega-3 fatty acids as they are very important for skin health and can help manage oil production and hydrating the scalp, and can thereby prevent dandruff.
