The summer of 2022 has been especially hot with higher temperatures and heatwaves across the U.S. and overseas. Although the warmer temperatures can be great for outdoor activities, too much heat can be dangerous.

Luckily, there are several ways to enjoy the hotter temperatures and stay safe. Check out these seven tips for staying cool in the heat.

1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is essential when dealing with warm temperatures since it helps keep the body cool and hydrated. However, it is also important to pay attention to your electrolyte levels. Electrolytes are vital to various functions in the body, like regulating muscle contractions. Signs of low electrolyte levels include headache, fatigue, muscle cramps, nausea, blood pressure changes, and low energy. Coconut water, watermelon water, sports drinks and Pedialyte are some beverages that have electrolytes.

2. Find A Cool Place Indoors

Air conditioners can provide relief from the heat, but they aren't always available or they can mean a sharp uptick in energy bills. Have a plan to cool off indoors, whether it’s at home, a community cooling center, a mall, movie theater or a public library. Too much exposure to the sun can cause stress on the body and mind.

3. Avoid Strenuous Outdoor Activities

Despite high temperatures, some people still want to enjoy the sun and have a tendency to disregard physical strain. Precautions should be taken during heatwaves. Outdoor activities can be delayed for cooler parts of the day. It's also important to take frequent breaks. Heading to the beach or pool for activities can also be the right option for cooling down.

4. Dress For The Temperatures

When outdoors during a heat wave, it is important to dress in lightweight, loose, light-colored clothing to allow air to circulate. Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses can also be used to protect yourself from the sun. Breathable fabrics for hot weather include cotton, silk, rayon and polyester.

5. Avoid Cooking With The Stove Or Oven

The heat from cooking with the stove or oven will spread throughout the home, which is not ideal during hotter temperatures. Consider consuming cold foods like sandwiches or salads or using a slow cooker to cook your meal throughout the day.

6. Eat Foods With High Water Content

Watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and lettuce can help with hydration in the heat. Hot and spicy foods can also make you sweat more, which will allow your body to cool down.

7. Create A Cool Sleeping Space

During a heatwave, nightfall doesn’t always provide relief from hot temperatures. To make bedrooms more comfortable when it’s time to snooze, use a breathable cotton sheet. Consider spraying your sheets with water before sleeping or place your sheet or pillow cases in a plastic bag or the freezer during the day. Make sure you are hydrated before bed and drink water if you happen to wake up in the middle of the night.
