A 7-year-old girl was shot during an argument that took place in an Arizona parking lot on Thursday.

A 29-year-old man was arrested by the Glendale Police Department in connection with the shooting. Cops responded to a ShotSpotter call for a single gunshot near 65th Avenue and Bethany Home Road around midnight. Officers then found a shell casing in the street before receiving a call roughly 10 minutes later about the child in the hospital who was shot multiple times. The girl succumbed to her injuries, according to 12 News.

The young victim was with her mother and 5-year-old sister when the shooting took place. The mother had driven to the area with her kids to pick up her boyfriend, cops said. A verbal fight erupted between the boyfriend and another man, identified as 29-year-old Terriance Armstrong Jr. According to the cops, the two had not met before.

As the vehicle with the children drove away, Armstrong allegedly fired at the car multiple times and shot the 7-year-old. None of the other occupants in the car were struck.

The mother drove to the hospital with her 7-year-old daughter after the incident. The girl lost her life just days before her 8th birthday, KTAR News reported.

Police arrested Armstrong, who admitted to shooting multiple times from his handgun after the altercation with the mother’s boyfriend. Cops found evidence for the shooting and discovered roughly 3,000 fentanyl pills inside his car.

Investigators said the suspect is facing multiple charges including homicide, drive-by shooting, aggravated assault, endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and possession of narcotics for sale. Investigators do not believe the case was gang-related or connected to a drug sale.

Mayor Jerry Weiers issued a statement addressing the death of the 7-year-old girl.

“Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of the 7-year-old girl whose life was needlessly taken overnight,” the mayor reportedly said. “Our police department worked diligently to find and apprehend the suspect of this terrible crime.”

Glendale Vice Mayor Jamie Aldama also issued a statement, 12 News reported.

"I want to thank the Glendale Police Department for working tirelessly to identify and arrest a suspect,” Aldama said, according to the outlet. “I am heartbroken by the senseless shooting that took the life of an innocent 7-year-old child by someone who holds no value for human life. My deepest sympathies are with the family, friends, and loved ones of this child."
