72-Year-Old Care Home Owner Charged With Raping Patient With Dementia
The owner of an assisted living facility in Baltimore, Maryland, was charged with rape of a 67-year-old resident.
According to court records released Friday, police reached Golden Doves Adult Medical Daycare, run by Dorothy Brown, in June 2018 on a sexual assault complaint. Golden Doves assistant manager Ashfaq Ahmed said the victim, who was coming to the daycare regularly, informed a social worker about the abuse who then informed the police.
The victim, who was suffering from dementia, told officers that Brown took her to the basement and forced her into sexual activity. Brown performed oral sex on the victim and also forced the victim to perform oral sex on her. She also told the victim she would slap her in the face if she spoke to anyone about the abuse, the Baltimore Sun reported.
The victim was taken to a medical center for examination. Tests confirmed the owner’s DNA was found on the victim’s breasts. The victim was immediately removed from the daycare and placed with family members.
Brown was arrested on Jan.25 and charged with first-degree rape and vulnerable adult abuse. She was released from prison earlier this month and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 21.
Brown’s attorney, Richard K. Scott, said five adults in Brown’s care were relocated to other facilities. He added that he did not know where they were relocated. He also said Brown will not plead guilty.
“As a result of the allegations that were made against her, state officials forced her to close down her adult day care. They took away her income and put her in jail for several days. She’s been in the business of adult daycare for 50 years with no problems from what she told me,” he said.
In a similar incident, an owner of an assisted living facility in Arkansas was sentenced to 75 days in jail for sexually assaulting residents. Angel Floro, 71, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree sexual assault in December 2018. The incident took place in 2016 when Floro entered a resident’s room and touched her inappropriately. This happened on two more occasions after which police were informed. During investigation, other residents too came up with similar accusations. The families of the victims were informed about the incident who then asked police for the surveillance video, 5 News Online reported.
