A 20-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn baby were killed Monday in Texas after unknown assailants fired multiple shots into her vehicle as she was leaving a gas station with her boyfriend.

The shooting reportedly occurred just a day before her family's baby shower. The deceased, identified as Jennifer Hernandez, had stopped at an intersection after exiting the Shell gas station on Airtex Drive before a white sedan sped up behind them, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO).

A man inside the white sedan, which had paper plates and tinted windows, sprayed bullets in the direction of Hernandez's vehicle, striking both her and her boyfriend, who wasn't identified.

The woman, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, ABC 7 reported.

Her boyfriend, who suffered two gunshot wounds, survived, the New York Post reported.

Sergeant Ben Beall of HCSO told the outlet that the incident may be the result of road rage, but Hernandez's boyfriend told the deputies they weren't involved in "any altercation" with the people in the other vehicle prior to the shooting.

"They did stop at the gas station [but] he said he has no idea where the vehicle came from. It just came out of nowhere and started shooting at him," Beall told deputies.

Hernandez's family told ABC 7 the soon-to-be mom was excited to welcome her baby boy, and was getting ready to open her nail business.

An unidentified witness told ABC 13 that Hernandez was on a call with her mom before being shot.

"She was on the phone with her mom and kept saying, 'I'm not going to make it, Mom,'" he recalled her telling her mom. "I called 911 and told them to get the ambulance because she was shot in the face."

Her family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover her funeral expenses. Her family demanded the person responsible for the murder be detained soon.

Meanwhile, authorities from the HCSO are searching for one or multiple suspects responsible for the shooting. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far.
