8-Year-Old Girl, Father Struck By Stray Bullets While Trick-Or-Treating In New York City
A man and his 8-year-old daughter out trick-or-treating on Halloween night were wounded by stray bullets after two men opened fire at each other following a verbal duel outside a supermarket in New York City.
The incident happened in front of Fine Fare Supermarket in Harlem just after 7 p.m. ET. The 39-year-old father was shot in the right arm while a bullet struck the child below her right knee. Officers also found another victim, a 36-year-old woman, who was shot in her right arm, WPIX-TV reported, quoting Rodney Harrison, NYPD chief of detectives. A preliminary investigation revealed that the three persons injured weren't intended targets.
The father and the child were not identified. The NYPD released surveillance images Sunday seeking public's help in identifying the suspects. No arrests were made in connection with the incident, the television station reported.
After suffering the gunshot wounds, the father and daughter were taken to the Harlem Hospital, while the wounded woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the New York Daily News. All three were listed in stable condition.
The man said his daughters were dressed as Elsa from Disney's "Frozen" and an astronaut when they were caught in the crossfire, according to ABC-affiliated WABC-TV. The younger child, who was 6 years old, wasn't wounded but she was left traumatized after the incident. The other girl ended up with a broken bone after the shooting. It was not clear if she would require any surgery.
"It was complete no regard for human life. You seen people there, seen the children, just a fraction of an inch left or right and there would be no more me, no more my baby, the violence has to stop," the father told the station.
In a similar incident last year, a 7-year-old Chicago girl was shot in the neck while out trick-or-treating on Halloween. The girl was walking on a sidewalk with other trick-or-treaters when a group of men from across the street opened fire. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said the victim wasn't the intended target.
