Irked by an 80-year-old man's repeated demands to have sex with his wife, a shopkeeper in India allegedly strangled the former to death.
The accused, identified as Mohan Chaudhary, 33, was arrested Monday after the elderly victim's body was found in a pond in Navi Mumbai, Hindustan Times reported. The deceased, identified as Shamakant Naik, reportedly owned properties, including flats, shops and plots worth millions in the Ulwe area, whilst Chaudhary ran a grocery shop in the locality.
Initially, cops thought Naik was murdered over a property dispute, but, following investigation, learned Chaudhary was the killer, Latestly reported.
Chaudhary had accompanied Naik's son, Shekhar, to lodge a missing complaint about the victim on Aug. 29, Hindustan Times reported. Naik's family told the cops he disappeared on Aug. 29 and his phone was since switched off.
Authorities inspected CCTV footage from nearby, and discovered Chaudhary carrying a body wrapped in a bedsheet on the back of his bike on Aug. 31.
Ravindra Patil, a police inspector from NRI Coastal police station, told Hindustan Times that Chaudhary killed Naik because the latter demanded sex from his wife and had offered to pay up to INR 10,000 ($136.68) for the same.
"Naik used to visit Chaudhary’s grocery shop. Naik had offered Chaudhary Rs 5,000 to sleep with his wife. On Aug. 29, Naik offered him Rs 10,000 and told Chaudhary to send his wife Heena to Naik’s godown," Patil told the outlet. "Irked by his demand, Chaudhary pushed Naik, following which he fell on ground and started bleeding after his head hit against the corner of a table. Chaudhary immediately closed the shutter of the shop and then strangulated Naik. He kept the body in the washroom."
Patil added the body was kept in the toilet till Aug. 31, and Chaudhary dumped it in a pond in the wee hours of the morning. Chaudhary told the cops during the investigation he threw the clothes and the mobile phone of the deceased into a garbage bin after disposing of his body.
