Fox’s “9-1-1,” which centers on the personal and professional lives of first responders, like firefighters, police officers and dispatchers, returns with its Season 2 premiere on Sunday.

Titled “Under Pressure,” the first new episode of the drama series will air at 8 p.m., immediately after Fox’s NFL programs. Joining the cast for the new season are Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Guzman. The former plays Maddie, a new 911 operator after Connie Britton’s operator Abby Clark left the series at the end of Season 1. Maddie is the sister of firefighter Buck (Oliver Stark), who happened to be romantically-involved with Abby. Meanwhile, Guzman stars as Eddie, a new addition to Capt. Bobby Nash’s (Peter Krause) team of firefighters.

“On one of the hottest days of the year, the first responders are pressured as harrowing incidents keep happening, including a road rage accident involving a van full of tourists, an emergency at an auto-repair shop and a vet with a live grenade embedded in his leg,” the Season 2, episode 1 synopsis shares. “Meanwhile, Buck is visited by his sister. Also, Athena [Angela Bassett] questions her relationship with Bobby. Then, at the fire station, new hire Eddie jeopardizes Buck’s chances of being chosen for a fireman calendar.”

The two-night Season 2 premiere of “9-1-1” begins Sunday, Sept. 23 on Fox. FOX

Sunday’s episode is part of a two-night Season 2 premiere event for “9-1-1,” with episode 2 airing on Monday at 9 p.m., which will be the normal day and time for new episodes moving forward.

Before tuning in for all the new drama, let’s take a minute to look back and recap how last season ended. The Season 1 finale, which aired back in March, wrapped up a few things, and, at the same time, it unraveled some new storylines.

In the episode, Hen (Aisha Hinds) apologized to her wife, Karen (Tracie Thoms), for cheating on her and begged her to take her back. Karen showed up a little while later to see if they could make things work. Also on the relationship front, Bobby realized that he wanted to get back out into the dating world, which happened to be what Athena had recently started doing, as well. They ended up on a date together.

As for Abby, after losing her mom, she decided she needed to take some time for herself, which she was never able to really do before. She needed to clear her head and get a new grip on what she wants out of life. This led to her booking a solo trip to Ireland, leaving behind her relationship with Buck. Though she said she’d return eventually, Britton is only set to reprise her role as Abby for one episode in Season 2, so the future isn’t looking good for Bucky and Abby as a couple.

Find out what happens next for these characters when “9-1-1” Season 2 premieres on Fox on Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT.
