9 New CW Series In The Works: ‘Charmed,’ ‘Roswell’ Reboots And More
Expect at least a few new programs coming to The CW in the upcoming season as the network has officially ordered pilots for eight shows, though that doesn’t mean each one will become a full-fledged series. After the pilot episodes are made, the network’s executives determine which shows they think will work best for their audience and from there, choose which ones will join their lineup.
Check out the eight new shows The CW has given pilot orders to, as well as their official loglines from the network.
1. “Charmed” Reboot
A fierce, funny, feminist reboot centered on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.
The CW might be happy about the new “Charmed” they’re working on, but that doesn’t mean the cast is. Original star Holly Marie Combs has been sharing her displeasure of the reboot on social media.
2. “Playing Dead”
A dysfunctional family dramedy about a mortician and his son whose lives are turned upside down when the woman who abandoned them 15 years ago returns and asks them to fake her death.
Executive producers and writers of this pilot, Rina Mimoun and Josh Reims, are no strangers to the world of CW/WB, as Mimoun worked on “Dawson’s Creek,” “Everwood,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Privileged” and “Hart of Dixie” while Reims produced on “Felicity,” “Everwood” and “Jane the Virgin.”
3. “Roswell” Reboot
After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
The pilot is being executive produced and written by Carina Adly MacKenzie, who just wrapped up writing on the network’s “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff, “The Originals,” which will air its series finale later this year.
4. “Spencer”
When a rising high school football player from South Central L.A. is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High, the wins, losses and struggles of two families from vastly different worlds — Compton and Beverly Hills — begin to collide. Inspired by the life of pro football player Spencer Paysinger.
Another day, another new Greg Berlanti series possibly heading to The CW. This show could join his six others on the network, which include “Arrow” and “Riverdale.”
5. “Skinny Dip”
After her husband tries to kill her on what she thought was a romantic cruise to celebrate their second wedding anniversary, a woman teams with a jaded ex-cop to exact her own twisted brand of revenge on her cheating spouse, and winds up uncovering a wider conspiracy in the process.
This pilot is based on the novel by Carl Hiaasen of the same name and is being produced by Keshet Studios. The production company originally planned to adapt it into a movie, but recently switched it to a series instead.
6. “Dead Inside”
After surviving an explosion that killed her hotshot detective big brother, an underachieving beat cop starts seeing his ghost, flipping their sibling dynamic on its head and allowing her to truly live her life for the first time, as they work together to help crime victims both living and dead, and figure out the unfinished business keeping his spirit on Earth.
Katie Lovejoy is set to write the pilot, and this would be her first major production should it move forward at the network.
7. “The End of the World As We Know It”
When a prison spaceship carrying the universe’s most deadly aliens crashes in Southern California, two young women with bigger dreams than working at a kids’ pizza place in The Valley are recruited by a space cop to hunt down the escaped criminals, who have camouflaged themselves as eccentric Angelenos.
He’s already doing zombies on The CW’s “iZombie,” so now Rob Thomas is giving aliens a try with as an executive producer on this new series that’s based on the book by Iva-Marie Palmer.
8. “In The Dark”
A flawed and irreverent blind woman is the only “witness” to the murder of her drug-dealing friend. After the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at Breaking Blind- the guide dog school owned by her overprotective parents.
One interesting aspect of this show that is definitely set to entice viewers, if they get the chance to watch it, is that Ben Stiller is one of the executive producers, as part of his Red Hour Films production company.
9. “Wayward Sisters”
This series would tell the story of Sheriff Jody Mills and a group of troubled young women, who were orphaned by supernatural tragedy, as they band together to fight the supernatural with help from Mills’ training.
This one is a bit different from the rest of the pilots as this acts a spinoff of the long-running CW series “Supernatural.” Though the backdoor pilot has already aired on TV as part of a recent episode of the Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki series, it has not yet been picked up to series.
The CW will announce their fall lineup in May.
