  • Her estate wasn't happy about the release of her music

Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” album has finally landed on Spotify and other major digital platforms worldwide. The highly anticipated release of her full studio catalog comes two decades after the death of the songstress.

The 1996 album became available for streaming Thursday midnight and was the first to make it to global release since her death. Also released alongside “One in a Million” is her 1994 debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,” which includes the tracks “Throw Your Hands Up” and “Back & Forth.”

Her 2001 album “Aaliyah,” which features the hit track “Rock the Boat,” will be available on streaming services starting Sept. 10. Also landing on streaming sites on Sept. 3 is the full soundtrack for “Romeo Must Die,” which featured Aaliyah in its cast. The singer also contributed to the film’s soundtrack, alongside singers Joe, B.G., Destiny’s Child, Ginuwine, Confidential, Dave Hollister and more.

Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the singer died at the age of 22 on Aug. 25, 2001, after the plane that she and the members of her record company were boarding crashed and caught fire shortly after takeoff at the Marsh Harbour Airport in Abaco Islands, Bahamas.

For years since her death, her estate had been in a dispute with Blackground Records 2.0, which opposes the release of her music. Earlier this month, the Estate of Aaliyah Haughton issued a statement opposing the planned release.

“This unscrupulous endeavor to release Aaliyah’s music without any transparency or full accounting to the estate compels our hearts to express a word—forgiveness,” read the statement.

“Ultimately, we desire closure and a modicum of peace so we can facilitate the growth of the Aaliyah Memorial Fund and other creative projects that embody Aaliyah’s true essence, which is to inspire strength and positivity for people of all creeds, races, and cultures around the world,” the statement concluded.

Coinciding with the release of Aaliyah’s music today is the release of a book about the life of Aaliyah, “Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah.” The book was written by Kathy Iandoli and offers details about the moments before the singer’s death.
