Melanie Martin, Aaron Carter's fiancée, will get to keep their son after a court granted her full custody.
On Thursday, the court decided at a hearing in Los Angeles that Martin, 30, was fit to take care of Prince Lyric, her son with the late singer. Thus, she was granted full custody of the 1-year-old, TMZ first reported.
However, unnamed sources told the outlet that Martin was not present during the hearing since she was in New York at the time. She was contacted by her legal team about the good news.
The "I'm All About You" crooner and the bartender welcomed their son in November last year. However, Prince had been under the care of Martin's mother since September, according to People.
The couple reportedly lost custody of their child due to concerns about drug use and domestic violence.
"I am excited about getting custody of our son. Aaron took it really hard when our son got taken away," Martin said in a statement shared with People.
"I know Aaron would have been ecstatic. This victory is in his honor. I only wish Aaron could be here to share this moment with me," she added.
Aaron's mom, Jane, told TMZ that she's happy with the court's decision because "the child should be with the mother."
Nick Carter's younger brother was found dead in his home in Lancaster, California, on Nov. 5. He was 34.
An official cause of death has not yet been determined.
Earlier this month, Aaron's twin sister, Angel Carter-Conrad, opened up about his untimely death, saying she had pleaded with her brother to let her help him two days before his demise.
"I spoke with him two days before he passed, and I begged, once again, for him to let us help," she wrote on Instagram before saying she did not know that would be the last time she would hear his voice.
"Aaron dying was the worst day of my life. I have loved him since we were born... It feels like a piece of my soul is gone. And yet, despite all this pain, his passing has lit a fire within me. I feel a calling and responsibility to help other families and continue the conversation to further break the stigmas that surround mental illness," she added.
