Accident Victim Dies While Undergoing 'Minor' Surgery For Fracture, Family Alleges Negligence
The family of a 50-year-old man, who died while undergoing a minor surgery on his right hand at a private clinic in India, has blamed the doctor and staff of negligence.
The victim, identified as Sheetla Prasad, underwent the procedure at a clinic in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, following a fracture on his hand. “It was a minor fracture in the right hand. The surgery was not major or life threatening, but still my father died,” the victim’s son, identified as Brijesh Prasad, said, according to The Times of India.
His family reportedly held protests outside the clinic after they were told about the death of the man.
Brijesh told local media his father met with an accident Sunday evening and injured his right hand, Live Hindustan reported [Google Translate showed].
“He was fit enough to drive his bike to a hospital where an X-ray confirmed fracture in his right hand following which he was advised surgery,” he said.
The surgery was conducted Sunday night, and within four hours “we were told that my father has been put on ventilator.”
“After a few hours, they told us that he passed away,” Brijesh reportedly said.
Eyewitnesses told the local media the family members protested, calling for justice. Senior police officers arrived at the scene and filed a complaint against the clinic.
“We are constituting a team under additional chief medical officer Dr A P Singh to conduct inspections of private hospitals,” Chief Medical Officer Dr Manoj Agrawal reportedly said.
In another recent case of negligence, a 24-year-old woman died while undergoing a tubectomy at a local health camp. Following the woman's death, her family alleged negligence on the part of the doctor. The victim, who has been identified as only Geeta, was taken to the camp in the western state of Rajasthan, where she underwent sterilization Sunday. During the operation, Geeta’s blood pressure shot up, and her health deteriorated. She was later referred to the district headquarters in the city of Barmer. However, she died on her way to the hospital. Local officers said the body of the woman was kept in the morgue, and an autopsy would be conducted to reveal the exact cause of death.
