Someone is trying to kill Noah Solloway. On the Season 3 premiere of Showtime’s “The Affair,” Noah was left bleeding in his apartment after someone stabbed him in the neck with a knife. Sunday’s episode 3 picks up a few hours before the stabbing with Juliette’s perspective and then immediately after the incident with Noah’s narrative.
Juliette
Juliette (Irene Jacob) decides to host a dinner with some of her students and Noah (Dominic West). Juliette makes a pit-stop at the library, and then grabs a quick lunch outside on the campus while reading a book. She has the book covered with a paper bag, like the ones middle school kids use to cover their text books. Two of her students approach and tell her how much they enjoy taking her class. One of the students ask Juliette what book she’s reading , and she responds that it’s just a boring little book. The students leave and the camera shows that Juliette is reading Noah’s book, “Descent.”
Back at her home, Juliette is talking on the phone as prepares dinner for her party. Juliette is talking to her 22-year-old daughter (yes, she has a daughter) who apparently is having a few boy issues. After Juliette is done catching up with her daughter and cooking dinner, she goes back to reading Noah’s book and gets a little sexually aroused by it.
At the dinner, Juliette keeps cutting her eye at Noah. The group is talking about whether or not a woman has to verbally agree before jumping in bed with a man. Juliette gives her opinion on the situation and then goes into the kitchen.
Mike (Guy Burnet), one of the students, comes in right behind and starts kissing Juliette but she tells him to stop. Audrey (Sarah Ramos) comes in a few seconds later unaware that Mike, who she revealed at the dinner she slept with, was in the kitchen. Audrey tells Juliette that she’s taking one of Noah’s classes and he’s a jerk. Audrey says Noah agitates her, but admits that she wants to sleep with him. Mike tells Audrey that she should and Audrey gets mad and thinks Mike is obsessed with her. Juliette leaves Mike and Audrey arguing in the kitchen and goes back into the living room. She asks where Noah went and the students tell her that he went upstairs because he wasn’t feeling well.
Juliette heads upstairs and finds him in her room reading a book. He apologizes and they start talking about why Juliette left Paris and came to America. During their conversation, Juliette reveals she’s married and her husband is back in Paris. Juliette and Noah eventually start making out, but Noah stops it from going further. Juliette wants him to stay, but he says he has to go and runs out of the house.
Juliette goes back downstairs, and Audrey is in the living room asking what she should do about Noah. Audrey says she thinks she should hook up with Noah and get it out of her system but Juliette talks her out of it. After everyone leaves, Juliette is seen hooking up with Mike in her kitchen.
She later Skypes with her husband and his nurse. Juliette’s husband is a lot older than her and very sick. Juliette tries to tell him how much she misses him, but she can’t have a conversation with him because of his illness. Juliette heads back downstairs to clean up her dining room and spots Noah’s coat on the back of a chair. She grabs and puts it on and finds his address in the pocket. Juliette decides to stop by Noah’s house to return the coat to him, but when she arrives to his apartment she finds him bleeding on the kitchen floor. She calls 911 and her narrative ends with Noah being rushed to the hospital.
Noah:
Noah’s story goes back and forth between him in the hospital after getting stabbed and flashbacks of when he was in prison. His point-of-view kicks off with him in the back of an ambulance being rushed to the hospital. Noah is in and out of consciousness. In one flashback to when he was in prison, Brendan Fraser’s character, a security guard at the prison, visits Noah in his cell and starts chatting with him.
The guard seems a little odd and asks Noah if he remembers him. Noah lies and says the guard looks familiar, and the guard introduces himself as Jon Gunther. He tells Noah he’s from Noah’s hometown and they met as teenagers at their high school swim meets. Noah doesn’t seem to remember Gunther but goes along with it. Gunther says he’s been following Noah’s career, and promises to keep an eye out on for him while he’s in prison.
Back in the present, Noah awakes in a hospital room. He’s already had surgery on his neck but he doesn’t remember what happened to him. A doctor is asking Noah a bunch of questions and Helen (Maura Tierney) walks into the room, glad that Noah is finally awake. She wants to know who stabbed him and gets alarmed when Noah says that he has no idea what she’s talking about. Helen is worried that Noah could have some brain damage but the doctor tells her that Noah is fine. The doctor tries to get Helen and her two youngest kids to leave the hospital room so Noah can rest, but Helen doesn’t want to leave. She sends the kids downstairs to get food and starts asking Noah questions about the stabbing. Noah tells his ex-wife that she can stay in the room but only if she’s quiet. Helen sits down in a chair and grabs Noah’s hand but he pulls it away from her. Helen grabs her purse, gives Noah a look and leaves.
We then get another flashback. Gunther comes and visits Noah bringing him a gift to celebrate — if that’s something that should be celebrated — him being in prison for six months. It’s a typewriter. Gunther says another inmate left it behind and he thought Noah could use it. Noah thanks him. Gunther is still awkwardly standing there, and tells Noah that he’s going to buy his book. Noah tells him to let him know what he thinks and tries to find some blank paper for the typewriter. Gunther hands Noah a stack of paper he can use.
Back in the present, two police officers are at Noah’s hospital room asking him about the stabbing. Noah doesn’t remember anything. They want to know if there’s anyone who would want Noah dead. There’s a bunch of people who probably want Noah dead. The officers ask about his relationship with Cole (Joshua Jackson) but Noah says they don’t talk. The officers ask if his estranged wife Alison (Ruth Wilson) could have possible tried to stab him. Noah doesn’t think so although he admits they don’t talk. The officers then ask about Juliette being at Noah’s apartment at 1 a.m. and tell him that she’s the one who found him. Noah is shocked because he had idea Juliette was in his home after he got stabbed.
Noah is eventually released from the hospital and his sister Nina (Jennifer Esposito) is there to pick him up. Noah has her take him to Juliette’s house because he wants to find out why she was at his apartment the night he was stabbed. Juliette tells Noah that he wasn’t expecting her but doesn’t explain that she was there to drop off his jacket. Instead of going home, Noah spends the night at Juliette’s. When she comes into the room to check on him, he kisses her but this time it’s her who stops him.
In another flashback, Noah is seen typing away on his typewriter when Gunther comes into his cell holding a copy of “Descent.” Gunther tells Noah that he likes it so far and asks him to sign a copy. Noah signs it “My old friend Gunther.” The guard thinks it’s funny Noah signed it like that and becomes fixated with a picture Noah has of Alison taped to his cell wall. Gunther points to the photo and asks Noah who it is. Noah tells him that it’s his wife, and Gunther tells Noah that he’s divorced. Gunther then gets angry and tells Noah he’s not allowed to have posters on the wall. He hits Noah and snatches the photo off the wall.
The episode ends with Noah calling the police and telling them that Gunther is a “monster” and he thinks that’s who stabbed him.
