‘Agents Of SHIELD’ Season 4 Spoilers: Who Is Madame Hydra? What The Marvel Comics Reveal
Mallory Jansen will portray her third character on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 4. After playing Aida, the life model decoy, and Agnes Kitworth, the Aussie love interest of Radcliffe, she’ll move on to play a comic book villain: Madame Hydra.
“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” revealed the good news during WonderCon in Anaheim, California over the weekend when audiences got an early screening of Tuesday’s episode.
“Since we’re bringing back Hydra in the Framework, we thought we’d bring it back with a force to be reckoned with,” executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen told Entertainment Weekly when they released the first photo of the new character. “Madame Hydra is a villain with the perfect combo of strength, sexy, and scary. We’ve thrown many challenges Mallory’s way and she’s always up for the task. We’re excited for fans to see how she makes Madame Hydra come to life.”
While the ABC drama is known to alter the comic book mythology, it’s still good to know the origins of new characters. Here’s what you need to know about Madame Hydra from the comics:
Powers: Madame Hydra doesn’t necessarily have crazy super powers. However, she is a great athlete, markswoman and can handle a bullwhip. Born Ophelia Sarkissian, the orphan was trained by Hydra’s founding father Kraken (also known as Daniel Whitehall) from a young age. She also has immunity to most toxins and poisons, which definitely comes in handy in the Marvel Comics.
Picking Her Poison: She doesn’t have super powers, but she knows science. Madame Hydra, also known as Viper, is a big fan of poison. She’s known to create whatever type of toxin she needs, and she comes up with fun ways to disseminate them: fangs, lipstick, darts.
Enemies: Surprise, surprise — Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. are often her adversaries in the comics. She’s also an enemy of the Avengers, X-Men, Secret Warriors, Daredevil and more.
She Spies On S.H.I.E.L.D.: After stealing helicarrier schematics, Madame Hydra hypnotized the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. crew that was onboard and planned to crash it into an event where the President was addressing Supreme Court and Congress. Black Widow stopped the catastrophe. Madame Hydra later tried to plant Spider-Woman as a double agent within S.H.I.E.L.D., a plan that ultimately backfired. It seems like her strategies may have worked out in the alternate reality of the Framework.
She Married A Superhero: Don’t expect “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” to delve into her marriage, but it’s certainly an interesting part of her history. After forcing Wolverine to make good on a promise, Madame Hydra actually married Logan to gain control of Madripoor, according to Comic Vine. Their wedded bliss ended with Wolverine stabbing her until she agreed to a divorce.
Madame Hydra makes her debut in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 4 on Tuesday, April 4 at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
