Canadian police Wednesday confirmed that Ager Hasan, a Canadian citizen who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death and then described the killing on Reddit, was arrested in Texas.

A Canada-wide warrant for Hasan's arrest was issued after it was reported that he had fled to the U.S. after the murder.

He was arrested Tuesday during an unrelated traffic stop in San Antonio while crossing the U.S. in, what police say, was an attempt to reach the Mexican border. Members of the U.S. Secret Service pulled over Hassan, who was driving a black Honda HR-V with stolen licence plates from Arkansas, and handed him to local police.

Waterloo Regional Police said Hasan’s 22-year-old girlfriend Melinda Vasilije was found dead from multiple stab wounds in her apartment in Kitchener, Ontario at approximately 3 am PDT on April 28 this year. Hasan and Vasilije had been dating for almost a year and the alleged stabbing was a “targeted incident," according to CTV News.

The case gained huge media attention in May after a Reddit user with the handle Redasblue101 claimed to tell Hasan’s side of the story. In a post that has since been deleted, the user claims he went to Vasilije’s house to mend their relationship after the couple broke up a few weeks before. The writer says that he stabbed Vasilije out of self-defense during an argument. The writer added he fled to the United States “to give myself some space and fully take in what happened before I turn myself in,” according to reports.

At the news conference, Waterloo police acknowledged the social media posts but did not confirm whether the accounts were in fact Hasan’s. "Our investigations are still ongoing in relation to the social media posts that Mr. Hasan has been believed to be posting over the last number of months. That information is part of the judicial proceeding and will be provided in court," Waterloo Regional Police Inspector Mike Haffner said, according to NBC News.

They added they were in contact with Hasan via email throughout the investigation, asking to turn himself in. There were several posts on an Instagram account believed to belong to Hasan in which he talked about his relationship with Vasilije since he fled to the U.S. In one that was posted on Tuesday, it seemed that he was hinting at coming clean to the police. “I am coming home,” it read.

Hasan crossed into the U.S. to Buffalo, New York driving a black Honda HR-V on the same day Vasilije’s body was discovered. After local authorities were alerted, a man matching his description was spotted switching licence plates on a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Harborcreek Township, near Erie, Pennsylvania around 10 am EDT the same day. It is believed that the man put the stolen plates on his own vehicle and fled the area.

Hasan was charged with one count of second-degree murder and three counts of breach of recognizance (skipping bail). He was being held in San Antonio, awaiting a trial in a Texas court before facing extradition.
