'AGT' Trapeze Fall: Partially Blind Husband Fails To Catch Wife During Performance
“America’s Got Talent” (AGT) judges and audience were left horrified on Tuesday's episode as a couple’s dangerous trapeze act went awfully wrong.
The acrobatic couple Mary and Tyce of Duo Transcend had previously wowed the judges in the auditions and were determined to continue their streak of excellence on the first night of “Judge’s Cut” on AGT.
Tyce was legally blind in his right eye due to a progressive eye disease, which made performing gravity-defying stunts with his wife of six years all the more risky. However, it was a risk that both of them were committed to take.
However on Tuesday, the risk did not pay off. After performing an array of deadly stunts on a trapeze bar that was on fire and suspended many feet in the air, the couple decided to up the risk factor for their big finish.
Tyce blindfolded himself and dangled upside-down by his feet and was supposed to catch Mary as she fell. However, when Mary fell backward, putting her faith in her husband’s talent, her ankles slipped through Tyce’s grasp and she fell on the floor.
The unexpected fall shocked not only the judges but also the audience, including Mary’s mother and the couple’s two-year-old son, Jaxx, who were there to cheer the duo. The moment was so terrifying that Jaxx’s grandmother pulled the toddler close before covering her eyes.
Thankfully, Mary fell on a thick safety mat that was placed directly underneath their suspended bodies before the performance begun. If Mary was hurt, she managed to hide it well. Moments after what looked like a painful fall, Mary got up on her feet and was joined by her partner a little while later.
As soon as he was safely back on the ground, Tyce immediately embraced and kissed his wife passionately. Although the couple told the judges that they would like to try the stunt again, all of them were against allowing the duo to have another go at it.
"No! It's fine! It's fine,” Mel B yelled immediately, while guest host Ken Jeong said, “This is not America's Got Perfection, it's America's Got Talent! Nobody can do this. I mean, it's OK!"
Simon Cowell echoed Jeong’s sentiments, saying, “I don't think there's ever been a singer on any of our competitions who's been note-perfect. It doesn't make them not amazing, it makes them human."
"Although the consequences of this are slightly worse than falling off-key, whereas you nearly broke your neck," Cowell added. "And the fact that you're nearly blind makes this incredible."
Howie Mandel was almost driven to tears by the couple’s daring act, praising their courage to put their lives on the line. “You almost got hurt very badly and your first thought was ‘Let me do that again!’ only on America’s Got Talent does that happen,” he said.
Tensed that they will not make it to the next round, Mary got emotional. "It means so much to us," she said. "It's been such a long road to get here, and to be through to the live shows means we're one step closer to the dream."
Despite their botched performance, Cowell assured them they will be moving to the next round, which is live shows at Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
