Airline Passenger Dies Mid-Air After Failed Resuscitation Attempts By Cabin Crew
A middle-aged man died onboard an easyJet flight from Cyprus to London despite frantic efforts to save him.
Concern spread across the cabin Thursday as the unidentified man, believed to be in his 50s, didn't wake up from his sleep. Flight attendants rushed to his aid and administered a defibrillator in a bid to resuscitate him but it proved unsuccessful, The Daily Star reported. It is unclear what caused his death.
The tragedy occurred three hours after the plane took off from the Greek island of Paphos. The passenger was traveling alone.
One witness praised the prompt actions taken by an air steward, saying the staff handled the situation with composure and professionalism.
"She's done absolutely amazingly, must be so tricky. The team handled the situation with extraordinary composure and professionalism," the woman told the outlet.
When the cabin crew members asked if there was any certified doctor or paramedic onboard the flight, two people hesitantly raised their hands. However, they couldn't rescue the man.
When a person, who claimed to be a nurse, asked one crew member if the man was breathing, a visibly trembling steward told him: "We can't say anything sir," the outlet reported.
Flight attendants helped passengers move seats as they tried to resuscitate the man. His death was confirmed while the plane was passing over Paris. The body was removed after the plane landed at Gatwick Airport in London, reported Greek City Time.
The airline issued a statement extending its condolences to the man's family.
"easyJet can confirm that sadly a passenger died onboard flight EZY8454 from Paphos to London Gatwick on 17 November. The well-being of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's highest priority. Our crew is trained to respond to medical issues and did all possible during the flight. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the customer and we are offering support and assistance at this difficult time," it said.
