AirPods Pro Tip: How To Pair Bluetooth Device With PlayStation 4
KEY POINTS
- The AirPods Pro offers great sound quality and would make a good audio accessory for gaming
- The PlayStation 4, however, doesn't have support for the AirPods Pro
- There's a way to connect the AirPods Pro to the PS4 for great gaming experiences
Apple and PlayStation 4 fans have most likely in one way or another hoped that someday, they'd be able to connect their AirPods Pro to their PlayStation 4 so they can enjoy great gaming and audio at the same time. The AirPods Pro's sound quality and wireless nature make them the ideal PS4 audio accessory. Sadly, the PS4 doesn't support Bluetooth audio
Apple Insider reported that those who try to pair the AirPods Pro with the PS4 via Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices will not succeed in doing so. Those who try to do so will be told that Bluetooth Audio is not supported, which means the two can't pair with each other.
Those who have some money to spare, however, can purchase the AirFly Bluetooth adapter from Twelve South. This nifty little gadget allows users to connect supported audio devices, such as the AirPods and AirPods Pro, to any electronic equipment with a 3.5mm audio port. Apple Insider noted that the 3.5mm auxiliary port on the underside of the DS4 controller works with it too.
Here's how to pair the AirPods Pro with the PS4 using the AirFly.
- First, interested players should get an AirFly from Twelve South. This trick works with the AirFly Duo and AirFly Pro, because both will allow audio from a 3.5mm jack to two wireless headphones. The AirFly Classic works with one wireless headphone only, while the AirFly USB-C only works with a USB-C port. It won't be able to connect with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
- Second, users should connect the AirFly Duo or AirFly Pro to the DS4 controller's headphone jack. AirFly Pro users should make sure that it is in transit mode (TX), then hold the button until the light flashes.
- Third, users must open the lid of the AirPods Pro charging case and press and hold the pairing button at the back until the light in front flashes white.
The two devices will pair with each other. The light on the AirPods Pro charging case will turn green or amber (if low on battery) once the pairing is successful. The light on the AirFly will turn white.
Players should now be able to hear game audio through their AirPods Pro. They won't be able to respond to in-game chats, however, as the AirFly will only transmit audio from the controller to the audio accessory. It won't transmit video game chat from the AirPods Pro to the PS4.
