Oregon police said two men wanted for allegedly killing seven people in a home outside Huntsville, Alabama, were in custody and awaiting extradition on Tuesday. The seven victims were killed as part of a shooting on June 5 before the home was set on fire.
The suspects, identified as John Michael Legg, 19, and Frederic Allen Rogers, 22, were arrested “without incident” on Sunday after a traffic stop in Marion County, Oregon. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said it had tracked the men since they left Alabama with the aid of the FBI.
Oregon police were also notified the men had relatives in the state, one of whom lived in Salem, near where the men were arrested.
Both men are facing capital murder charges and are expected to be extradited to Alabama in the next few days.
Police said the June 5 shooting was due to a dispute within a club called the “Seven Deadly Sins,” of which Legg and Rogers were members. Morgan County Sheriff Ron Puckett said the group was involved in illegal activity involving money and drugs but would not provide more details. However, Puckett said the club posed no further threat to Morgan County after the shooting.
“We believe it was just a local club of some of our victims and these two guys,” Puckett said. “They were forming a club and calling themselves the seven deadly sins.”
Puckett said at a press conference Monday they suspected the dispute was over Legg and Rogers’ desire to leave the club and start with a “clean slate. “
“We believe based on the investigation that they were doing away with the club,” Puckett said. “This was probably one of the ways they were going to wipe the slate clean if you will.”
Six of the victims were identified as Tammy England Muzzey, 45; Emily Brooke Payne, 21; Roger Lee Jones Jr., 19; Jeramy Wade Roberts, 31; William Zane Hodgin, 18; and James Wayne Benford, 22. The seventh victim was identified as a 17-year-old woman, whose name was not released.
Police said the home belonged to Muzzey and a dead dog was found on the scene, but did not say if it was killed from the shooting or subsequent fire.
“This is a big scene. It is horrific in scope, from the district attorney to the sheriff to the coroner, no one can remember anything like this in Morgan County,” Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Mike Swafford told reporters on June 5.
