A woman in Alaska found an abandoned newborn baby along with a heartbreaking note from the infant's mother indicating that she could not afford to feed the child, authorities said.
The infant was found swaddled in blankets inside a cardboard box that was left at the intersection of Dolphin Way and Chena Point Avenue in Fairbanks, at around 2 p.m. on News Year's Eve, Alaska State Troopers said in a news release.
The outside temperature was 1 degree with a wind chill of -12 when the baby was found. "The child was alive and seemed to have been abandoned at the location recently. There was a note left with the child indicating the parent could not take care of it. The child was transported by EMS to a local hospital and was found to be in good health," the news release said.
Roxy Lane, a resident from Fairbanks who found the infant near mailboxes next to her home, posted a short video of the infant on Facebook along with the note she discovered, New York Post reported.
The note that began with a plea for help read: “I was born today on December 31, 2021 (at) 6 a.m. I was born 12 weeks premature. My mom was 28 weeks when she had me. My parents and grandparents don’t have food or money to raise me. They never wanted to do this to me."
“Please take me and find me a loving family. My parents are begging whoever finds me. My name is Teshawn," the note continued.
In her Facebook post, Lane pleaded with anyone who knew the mother to reach out as she fears the mother might be feeling abandoned and desperate. Lane said she hopes the mother gets the medical attention she needed. She also discussed Alaska's Safe Haven rule that allows safer options for surrendering a child.
"There is always a safer, humane choice to surrender a baby and you will not get in trouble or even have to answer any difficult questions. Take the baby to a fire station, or church, or hospital and they will take care of them," Lane said.
Meanwhile, Alaska State Troopers are asking anyone with information about the child to contact AST in Fairbanks at 907-451-5100 or submit a tip anonymously through the AKTips smartphone app.
