Alec Baldwin Breaks Silence After Fatal Shooting On 'Rust' Set

Alec Baldwin has broken his silence on the fatal shooting on the set of his new film "Rust" Thursday.

"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," Baldwin, 63, wrote on Twitter Friday.

He continued, "I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."

Baldwin was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, filming his new movie "Rust," which he's starring in and producing, when he discharged a prop gun on the set that resulted in the death of 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins, the film's director of photography, CNN reported, citing investigators.

Director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured and transported to Christus St. Vincent's Regional Medical Center for treatment. Souza's current condition is unclear.

A representative for Baldwin told E! News there was "an accident" due to "the misfire of a prop gun with blanks" while the film was in production.

Baldwin received some words of comfort from fans and followers after photos surfaced of him hunched over, in tears and distressed moments after the incident.

"Please take care of yourself. This was NOT your fault. You are a kind, loving man with so many people supporting you!" writer, editor and photographer Joy Tipping commented.

"Thank you. She is my friend. Her son is my family. It was not your fault, and her final moments I am certain were spent feeling so happy she was filming you," wrote Rachel Mason, the director of "Circus of Books."

The Sante Fe Sheriff’s Department told Entertainment Tonight that the investigation "remains open and active." No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made thus far in connection with the incident, and witnesses continue to be interviewed.

Police are also investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged from the prop firearm.

Prior to the incident, several "Rust" crew members allegedly quit the production due to concerns over conditions and safety issues — including gun safety procedures — and COVID-19 protocols not being followed before the shooting, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing an unnamed "knowledgeable crew member."

Rust Movie Productions, the production company behind Baldwin's film, has since shut down production.

"The safety of our cast and crew is the top priority of Rust Productions and everyone associated with the company," Rust Movie Productions said in a statement obtained by Deadline. "Though we were not made aware of any official complaints concerning weapon or prop safety on set, we will be conducting an internal review of our procedures while production is shut down. We will continue to cooperate with the Santa Fe authorities in their investigation and offer mental health services to the cast and crew during this tragic time."
