An expert recently warned that finally proving life outside of Earth exists might be the downfall of humanity, adding that the Earth’s defenses will prove futile against advanced alien technology.

According to journalist and author Bryan Walsh, who penned “End Times: A Brief Guide to the End of the World,” there is a world of difference between humans and aliens not only in terms of distance or space but in advancement as well.

“Humans and aliens are likely to be separated not merely by gulfs of space but time as well. If extraterrestrial have rates of development anything like human beings – meaning rapid technological growth following industrialization – a head start of just a century could be enough to create a massive military gap, akin to the difference between a World War I-era army and the modern US Military,” Walsh said in a report. Walsh’s book analyzes the existential threats being faced by humanity today.

Based on the book, humans are considered fairly “newcomers” when it comes to advanced technology because aliens had much more time to evolve. This means that when it comes to technological capabilities, an alien race would have more modern and more powerful tools than us Earthlings. To put things in perspective, the report showed that Earth weapons would look like World War 1 artillery compared to aliens who will most likely have modernized weapons.

Because of this, it would be foolish and dangerous to make contact with aliens today. “We Homo sapiens only developed the ability to send and receive space signals, and therefore be capable of making contact, less than a hundred years ago, but the Universe has existed for about 140 million times longer,” Walsh said.

The author is not the only one who thinks it is risky to make contact with alien species. Even the late Stephen Hawking believed that it is dangerous to get some kind of response from a civilization we know nothing about. According to a report, Hawking likened the possibility of how Europeans encountered Native Americans and how the latter was almost wiped out on the premise of a New World.

“Breakthrough Message is an international competition to create messages that could be read by an advanced civilization,” Hawking wrote in “Brief Answers To The Big Questions.”

With this in mind, the late physicist went on further to say that humans should be very wary about answering back to alien signals until such time our own technology has also developed further.

“Meeting a more advanced civilization, at our present stage, might be a bit like the original inhabitants of America meeting Columbus – and I don’t think they thought they were better off for it.”
