Anxiety is a natural reaction of your brain to stressful situations. Persistent anxiety, however, can be overwhelming and cause adverse impacts on your quality of life. If you go on like this for some time, it can take a toll on your mental health, affecting your focus and concentration, as well as your ability to sleep. It can also affect your physical wellbeing, as well as induce heart palpitations and dizziness.

Dealing with Anxiety

There is no catch-all treatment for anxiety. Some approaches work, but these depend on the situation and severity of the condition. Although psychological treatments may be the most common treatment method, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests taking some supplements may also help.

Supplements That Help Ease Anxiety

Magnesium

This mineral performs several important functions in the body, and studies have shown that magnesium may be used to treat anxiety. A methodical review examined the results of 18 diverse studies and found that magnesium supplements may help improve anxiety events in people who are prone to suffering from the condition. A brief review study also revealed that people suffering from anxiety caused by premenstrual syndrome could benefit from taking magnesium supplements.

Researchers, however, admit that more studies need to be performed to confirm their findings. You can also source magnesium from foods like spinach, black beans, quinoa, whole wheat, almonds, and cashews.

Chamomile Extract

Sourced from the chamomile flower, this extract has been used since ancient times for its calming effects. The National Center for Complementary Integrative Health revealed that initial evidence shows a chamomile dietary supplement may help in treating generalized anxiety disorder. This anxiety disorder, often referred to as GAD, is one that involves a person feeling anxious about almost anything and everything for no reason at all.

In one study, researchers found that those who took chamomile extracts for eight weeks saw their GAD symptoms reduced. The volunteers who took 1,500mg of chamomile every day said that the effects were similar to that of an anti-anxiety drug.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Many studies have found consuming fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids as helpful to the heart. Recent studies also show that it may help ease anxiety symptoms. A meta-analysis examined the findings of 19 clinical tests and found that taking omega-4 supplements can help people suffering from anxiety.
