Almost 4 Out Of 5 US Voters Support A Face Mask Mandate, Says Survey

Seventy-nine percent of American voters say they support a federal face mask mandate as coronavirus cases in the U.S. top 4.2 million, according to a new poll from Harvard CAPS/Harris released to The Hill.

The survey also indicates that 70% of respondents also support fines for individuals that violate mask mandates.

“It’s a very logical public — first and foremost they care about curbing the virus and so they back masks and full enforcements of masks,” Mark Penn, Harvard CAPS/Harris polling director, told The Hill.

Face mask mandates have been growing across the country as some cities such and states have issued their own requirements. Retailers have also issued face mask policies with several companies such as Walmart, Target, Kohl’s Home Depot, Lowe’s, Costco, and Best Buy, requiring them when shopping in their stores.

McDonald’s also announced that face masks are required in its restaurants while airlines Delta, United and Southwest have upped their face mask policy, requiring them in all airports they serve. Violating the airlines’ face mask requirement could result in banning from flying with the companies while the face mask policy is in place.

A total of 30 states have mask mandates in place, with Vermont becoming the most recent to implement the requirement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in April that wearing a face-covering can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
