It would seem that there are a lot of people today who are not that keen about personal hygiene. A new study showed that almost 50% of individuals in the civilized world don't change into new underwear daily.

The disturbing information was a result of research conducted by Tommy John, a known underwear creator. Researchers say that around 45% have been wearing the same pair of underwear for two or more days.

What made it worse was that the research also showed 13% of those who were asked in a survey said they had used the same underwear for about seven days. In some cases, it could even be more than seven days.

The top offenders were men, who showed they are 2.5 times more likely compared to women to wear the same pants for a week or more. This does not mean, however, that women are not doing the same. In fact, they did not fare much better.

A Tommy John representative, who revealed they conducted a survey of around 1,000 Americans as part of their research, said results among men and women are almost even. It showed that the number of men and women who kept on wearing the same underwear for several days is nearly the same. This perhaps puts in doubt the theory that women are better at hygiene than men or vice versa.

The study also exposed the fact many people seldom invest in new undies, with 46% of them saying they had owned a set for at least a year or more. Another 38% say they forgot or have no inkling how long they had owned certain sets.

According to Tommy John, it is recommended you purchase new sets of underwear every six months or at most, after one year. This is because of the accumulation of fungi and other microorganisms on the underwear, which could cause yeast or urinary tract infections.

The spokesperson for Tommy John also said that results indicate women are at a higher risk for such infections. This is because their underwear is more prone to moisture, the perfect habitat for fungi, and harmful microorganisms.

Tommy John recommends that you change your underwear daily and wash the ones you have worn. Subjecting the washed underwear to low heat for approximately 30 minutes can help minimize the number of bacteria it has accumulated.
