'Altered Carbon' Season 2 First Look Gives Us At Gruff And Upgraded Anthony Mackie
We finally got our first look at the new season of the Netflix series “Altered Carbon.” This season stars Anthony Mackie as a “re-sleeve” of Season 1 protagonist Takeshi Kovacs, and this time he has new upgrades.
Even though the release date for “Altered Carbon” Season 2 is only weeks away, our first look was only in the form of a teaser trailer, showing off brief glimpses that act as clues to where the plot will take us next; and Mackie himself, with shots of him taking shots, flexing in his new attire, and pulling handguns into his palms somehow telekinetically -- all while his monologue plays over the cryptic footage.
“This is a ghost story,” Mackie’s Kovacs says. “Technology has conquered death.”
“Altered Carbon” shows us a cyberpunk future world where we’ve explored the galaxy and have, for all intents and purposes, become immortal through a process of implanting our minds into new bodies called “sleeving.” The character of Kovacs is a soldier from another planet called Harlan’s World, where most of his fellow soldiers and friends have died. Hundreds of years later, he finds himself on Earth solving a murder and hired by the murder victim himself.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Season 2 follows 30 years after the murder investigation with Kovacs investigating something a little more personal: the search for his long lost love, Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). This takes him back to Harlan’s World where we just might get some more insight into Kovac’s past. His past self was played by Joel Kinnaman, a man stumbling around in his new body hundreds of years after his supposed off-world death. Now, as Mackie, he confidently sports some kind of enhanced upgrades that allow him to attract his guns magnetically to his hands.
He hints at his past in the teaser, saying: “We are trailed by specters. They cling to us like shadows. But if you chase after your ghosts, you just might become one.” We’ll get to see more of Mackie and his newly found abilities when “Altered Carbon” Season 2 hits Netflix Feb. 27.
