KEY POINTS

  • There is an aluminum can shortage that is affecting soda companies
  • This could be because consumers hoarded various supplies, including food and beverages
  • Manufacturers of aluminum cans said they have seen a considerable increase in demand over the past couple of months and are now struggling to cope

Shortage of aluminum cans has affected soda production across the United States, which has resulted in decreased availability of soda flavors in the market.

As lockdowns were imposed during the past few months, consumers hoarded various supplies, including food and beverages, according to reports. Americans who stocked up on canned drinks during the height of the lockdown strained soda manufacturers.

Now, the lockdown claimed its latest victim -- the aluminum cans that soda makers need for some of their popular products. Manufacturers of aluminum cans said they have seen a considerable increase in demand over the past couple of months and are now struggling to cope, KHOU 11, a CBS-affiliated TV station, reported.

This huge demand reportedly caused shortages in some areas of famous soda brands. Majority of restaurants, as well as other dining places and events, serve bottled beverages, revealed the Brevard Times, an online news website based in Brevard County, Florida. These businesses ceased operating when lockdown orders were put in place. As a result, many Americans started buying their favorite beverages at grocery stores and storing them at home. Reports said consumers favor canned beverages over their bottled counterparts because they are easier to store.

A fan reportedly took to Twitter to ask why they were having difficulties finding Cherry Coke Zero. The company answered his query by explaining they were experiencing a bigger demand for products consumed at home.

The company also assured the fan that they were taking steps to adapt to the situation and working to moderate the challenges happening during this unique situation. "We appreciate your loyalty to our beverages; please know that we're working hard to keep the products you love on the shelves," the company added in a Twitter reply.

The sale of canned sodas increased by 30% in March and April, a report by KHOU said. This caused the inability of some stores to get their hands on certain brands of soda. Due to the unprecedented situation, both Pepsi and Coca Cola are reportedly forced to give their attention to their most popular flavors just so they could match the demand. This made the less famous flavors harder to get, at least for the time being.
